Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with disabilities to help them access the general curriculum and achieve their educational goals. Special education services in Texas are governed by state and federal laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Texas Education Code.

Section 504 services are provided to students with disabilities who may not require special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) but still need accommodations or support to access the general education curriculum.

(TEA) defines gifted and talented students as those who perform, or show the potential for performing, at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who exhibit high-performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area, possess an unusual capacity for leadership, or excel in a specific academic field. Gifted and talented education involves specialized programs and services designed to meet the unique educational needs of these students.
